Dementia Action Week 2021 will see us coming back to face-to-face delivery stronger than ever before.
We are launching two crowdfunding campaigns to raise money for exciting and innovative equipment that will benefit our members and people living with Dementia in the wider community. We have received part funding to cover the costs of a Mobii Table, a portable and interactive projection system, and we also want to purchase some adapted bikes and passenger cycles with our partners at Bike Hive at Alexandra Park. Find out more about our campaigns by vising our Wall on People’s Fundraising, click the buttons here, or keep reading below.
Our groups will have a renewed focus on getting stronger and fitter following long periods at home, and we are encouraging members be social and active. We have rebuilt our raised bed at our favourite venue, the Amani Centre in Moss Side, so that we can have members pottering outside, growing vegetables, fruit, flowers and herbs. We also aim to take members out on more walks in the nearby parks and further afield, using funding from Sport England to increase walking.
From 17th May, we will begin our awareness campaign in Old Trafford, encouraging people to seek a Dementia diagnosis for their relatives and to take up the offer of support and activities that Together Dementia Support can offer. We particularly encourage South Asian families to get in touch with the assurance you can maintain your elder’s dignity and wellbeing by getting help with Dementia.
Our Walk & Talk group swill resume in Longford Park, Stretford, Wythenshawe Park, Boggart Hole Clough, and Alexandra Park Whalley Range, to enable people living with Dementia and their carers to get out and enjoy the Spring flowers – and each others’ company!
For carers, we will host a special Zoom session at 7pm on Tuesday 18 May, where we will discuss a Dementia Carers Charater. Carers will decide what right they would like to see agreed and upheld to take care of them and give them better support in their role. The Zoom is open to any Dementia carers and interested people should contact us: email@example.com
Our Crowdfunding Campaigns 2021
This year, we are focusing on crowdfunding for some exciting and innovative equipment that will benefit not just our members, but people living with Dementia in our communities. We have received funding toward two pieces of innovative technology, but we need your help to raise the remaining cash.
Creative, fun and active activities play a key part in decreasing social isolation, stimulating cognition, encouraging independence and increasing mobility and motor skills. In a post-COVID world, where social interaction and physical contact has to be kept to a minimum, TDS has been limited in the ways it can deliver these activities.
The first piece of equipment is called a Mobii Table – it’s an innovative portable projector that real-time reacts to hands touching the images it creates. Participants can stimulate their cognition by playing games, painting pictures, manipulating objects and having fun with others. It won the National Dementia Care Outstanding Product Award in 2018 and has had glowing feedback from users and professionals alike. Manchester Airport Fund has awarded us £2,000 toward the cost of the table, and we are campaigning for a further £4,000 to cover remaining costs.
Our second campaign is to raise funds with our partners at Bike Hive to purchase some adapted bikes and passenger bikes for use by our members and the public in Alexandra Park. We know so many of our groups would enjoy this fun and gentle exercise, or would enjoy being carried around the park on the passenger bikes so they can get out and about. We need £3,000 to purchase these bikes.
NHS England estimates that 62% of people aged over 65 will have a diagnosis of Dementia. In England alone, nearly 2,000 people per month are diagnosed with Dementia, and this number is growing.
Together we can make a BIG difference.
