Together In Song are a gospel choir group, made up of members of the local community who are living with dementia or who care for somebody with dementia, and we are delighted to announce that their music is now available to purchase. They have recorded 5 tracks for your enjoyment, which could be an excellent Christmas stocking filler that supports a local community project.

An enormous thank you to our choir leader Kadria Thomas for her hard work to bring this project to fruition. The CD can be purchased for £7 +£1.50 p&p.

Please do get in touch with us if you’d like to purchase one, by emailing sally@togetherdementiasupport.org

Together Dementia Support Shortlisted for National Lottery People’s Projects

Together Dementia Support are delighted to be on the shortlist for the National Lottery’s People’s Projects funding competition!

How will the funding be used?
If we won funding, our group would use the funding to purchase an accessible minibus to enable people living with dementia to attend group activities and improve their quality of life. The minibus will mean that they will be able to attend their sessions, especially the gospel choir which sings regularly at community events. The minibus will also be used for trips to the countryside, leisure centres, art galleries and other places of their choosing.

How can I vote and support your project?
Visit the People’s Projects website and submit your vote online. You will need to fill in your name, email address and postcode. Then you will receive an email with a voting link that you need to click on to confirm your vote. Please remember: In order for your vote to be counted, please follow the link in the email and remember to check your junk folder! Thank you.

When can I vote?
Voting opens for all projects at 9am on Monday 16 April 2018 and closes at midday on Monday 30 April 2018.

How can I vote if I don’t have an email address?
You can vote by post by sending a postcard to ‘Freepost THE PEOPLE’S PROJECTS’ (this must be in CAPITAL LETTERS) To be counted, the following details must be clearly written on the postcard: your name, postcode, address and telephone number, and the name of the project (or Projects) you wish to vote for. Please use a standard postcard format, with your voting details on the left-hand side and the FREEPOST address on the right-hand side. No postcode is needed for the FREEPOST address, and just leave the other side blank.

Please send your postal vote by last post Wednesday 25 April 2018 to help ensure it arrives in time. Postal votes must be received by 12pm (midday) on Monday 30 April 2018. You can vote once per person per region. For children and vulnerable adults, we advise you to put their postcards in an envelope and follow the instructions for the FREEPOST postal vote, ensuring the only address on the envelope is the FREEPOST address.

We would be delighted if you would support us and cast your votes to help our Fab Forgetful Friends and other community groups for people with dementia and carers living in Manchester.

For further information, please visit the People’s Projects website.

Together Dementia Support Welcomes Vicky Kay To The Team

Welcome to our new Service Manager, Vicky Kay.

Vicky will work closely with Sally doing a mix of delivery of groups and strategic planning and fundraising (our priority for the year!)

Vicky previously worked as an Activities Coordinator at a nursing home with 2 Elderly & Mentally Infirm (EMI) wards; As a Development Worker for a very small local charity supporting blind and partially sighted people; and as a Service Manager at a national charity supporting older people.

Vicky says, “I learnt about neurodegenerative conditions including various dementias while studying for a BSc in Psychology (and also through work-related training).  I also have an MSc in Social Psychology with some knowledge on how groups develop and can be fostered into meaningful friendships.”

Although she grew up near Stockport, Vicky now lives in the city centre.  She is an animal lover, likes going to the cinema, and socialising.

We’re sure she will be a great asset to Together Dementia Support and that you will enjoy getting to know her.

If you want to contact Vicky directly, her mobile number is:  07763 565160 and e-mail:  Vicky@togetherdementiasupport.org

A Christmas Thank You to all of our Volunteers

We would like to thank all of the wonderful volunteers who made it possible to organise the Together In Song Christmas Party last week. Together In Song is Together Dementia Support’s gospel choir for local people living with dementia and their carers and families. Along with family and friends, the Together In Song choir enjoyed a great Christmas get-together with music and dancing, and some lovely volunteers helped to run the event and served the party-goers some delicious festive food.

A huge thank you also goes to all of our amazing volunteers who support us all year round by helping to run our community groups for people with dementia, driving group members to the meetings, fundraising and organising days out and events. We hope you all have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Fabulous Forgetful Friends Spread Their Message: Live Positively With Dementia

The Fabulous Forgetful Friends, a group managed by Together Dementia Support, decided that they would make a film to challenge people’s negativity about having dementia.  They feel that the public don’t know the range of people who are living well with dementia (of which Alzheimer’s is the most common form).  They  wanted to show that they are active citizens, trying to do all they can to battle with the difficulties that dementia can bring.  For some it’s about keeping physically fit, for others it’s about being in nature, or spending time with friends, while others want to campaign and educate people.

As one member says in the film, “Fill your life with happiness as much as you can.”  The group want to encourage others who have been given a dementia diagnosis to come and join the group.  “We have a lot of fun and are encouraged by each other”

If you would like one of the Fabulous Forgetful Friends to come and speak to your staff or members of the public – so that you can be inspired – please get in touch with Sally by email  sally@togetherdementiasupport.org
And if you’d like to join the group and become even more fabulous then you’ll be made most welcome!
