Top Tips for Carers

At our Carer’s Drop In Session on 3rd October, our group discussed how to support contentment in relatives with dementia.

At Chorlton Central Church, the group had a very positive discussion and came up with some top tips for Carers to increase wellbeing and contentment:

  1. Smile!
  2. Don’t contradict or citicise.
  3. Be humorous sometimes. Try singing, dancing or just being silly!
  4. Be affectionate with physical contact.
  5. Pay compliments and give praise.
  6. Play music and encourage singing.
  7. Acknowledge and validate what the person might be feeling.
  8. Let the person feel in control as much as possible.

Whilst carers were chatting, their relatives had the opportunity to get involved in some fun activities. Pauline and Mavis got involved in some Decopatch and came up with NoEyeDeer, their marvellous Decopatch creation!

Thanks to everyone for their time, and for the great ideas that you contributed.

Together In Song Gospel Choir Perform at Black History Month Launch Event

Last week Together In Song, Together Dementia Support’s gospel choir, delivered a great performance in the beautiful setting of Manchester Cathedral.

The performance was part of the Greater Manchester Black History Month Launch event on 26th September 2017 which featured performances from a number of other talented artists.

Thanks to BHMGM for organising a fantastic event that showcased Manchester’s outstanding performing arts scene, and thank you to the Together In Song choir for their hard work and dedication.

Fabulous Forgetful Friends have a say at Wythenshawe Hospital

Members of Fabulous Forgetful Friends, Together Dementia Support’s peer support and influencing group, had the brilliant opportunity to talk with staff from the Memory Clinic at Wythenshawe Hospital.

We offered ideas about how dementia diagnoses could be better delivered: with someone to support you; by a professional who knows you as an individual; shown real empathy; given enough time to talk; offered hope and encouragement; with good, quick follow-up; with ongoing community support and signposting to peer support groups – such as Fabulous Forgetful Friends! We feel that it’s really important for people with dementia to have a say in how dementia care is delivered to the community.

It was a very positive meeting and we hope that we might have given food for thought. Thank you to the Memory Clinic for hosting us, and of course, thank you to the Fabulous Forgetful Friends for all your valuable ideas, time and commitment. You are making a difference!
