About the event
Caring in Hospital
Together Dementia Support, in collaboration with the MFT Hospital Dementia Nursing Team, will be hosting a series of informative training sessions for family caregivers of individuals with dementia.
The dates of all three sessions are:
- Wednesday 12 June 1.30 - 3pm - Practical care in hospital
- Friday 21 June 1.30 - 2.30pm - Legal and safeguarding issues
- Friday 28 June 1.30 - 2.30pm - Discharge from hospital
These online sessions aim to provide a platform for participants to inquire, exchange experiences, and gain insights into the functioning of the systems in order to enhance the overall experience for both the caregiver and their loved one during their hospital stay.
The first session, scheduled for Wednesday, 12th June from 1:30 to 3:00 pm, will focus on Practical Care in Hospital. Lead Nurses specializing in dementia, Lesley Baston and Sam Turner, will delve into hospital initiatives designed to provide optimal care for dementia patients. Topics such as nutrition, maintaining continence and mobility, managing delirium, fostering staff familiarity with the patient, and the hospital's Carers' Strategy will be covered.
Session two, taking place on Friday, 21st June from 1:30 to 2:30 pm, will address Legal and Safeguarding Issues. Andy Craggs, Matron of the Mental Health Safeguarding Team, will explore the assessment of mental capacity, the significance of Best Interests meetings, and the implementation of DOLS orders. Additionally, Paul Spencer, Clinical Nurse Specialist in Palliative Care, will touch upon the subject of advanced care planning.
The final session, scheduled for Friday, 28th June from 1:30 to 2:30 pm, will focus on Discharge from Hospital. Helen Hampson from the Hospital Discharge Team will engage participants in discussions on discharge planning and available options, aiming to provide a comprehensive understanding of the process and choices available.
