About us:

Together Dementia Support are here to help people to live positively with Dementia in Manchester and Trafford. There are an estimated 5,000 people in Manchester currently living with Dementia. We support people to live actively, socially and positively, with support for both people living with Dementia and their loved ones.

Since being established in 2014, TDS has supported over 1,000 people living with Dementia and their loved ones. We currently have over 280 members and 300 carers who we support week in, week out, 52 weeks a year.  Our dedicated team of Dementia Group Leaders and volunteers are the lifeblood of our service, working to improve physical and mental health and enable people to live positively with Dementia.

For people living with Dementia, we offer a range of activities such as social groups, walking groups, arts & crafts, music and games groups, as well as one-to-one at home social activity support. For carers, we provide online and in person group support, one-to-one advice and guidance, training opportunities and a friendly ear to listen.

About the role:

We’re looking for a reliable Catering Volunteer to support our North Manchester Friendship & Activity Group – preparing a tasty hot or cold lunch for around 15 people each week. You’ll be hands on in the kitchen, completing paperwork like allergen sheets, and making sure you’re adhering to dietary requirements to keep everybody fed, safe and happy.

Skills needed:

  • Time keeping – our group only runs from 11am until 2pm, so lunch needs to go out on time! It doesn’t always need to be bang on, but it’s better if it is!

  • Organisation and confidence in a small domestic kitchen

  • Competent knife skills for chopping and dicing

  • Understanding of allergens and correct food storage

  • A can-do attitude – the food won’t be complicated, but we still want it to look nice!

  • Creativity to come up with lunch ideas and menus – for example, if you like baking, then make a lovely dessert for our members!

An example of a volunteer catering shift might be:

  • Arriving at 10:30, and setting up the kitchen ready for hot drinks to be served to our members

  • Setting up the dining room with tables, chairs, tablecloths and cutlery

  • Preparing the chosen main meal of the day – this could range from jacket potatoes with cheese and beans, to quiche and potato salad, etc.

  • Preparing the chosen desset – this could be Eton Mess, ice cream, fruit salad, etc.

  • Cleaning pots, pans, utensils, plates, cutlery and the kitchen

  • Putting waste and recycling in correct bins

  • Completing the allergen and food temperature paperwork

  • Helping put away the tables and table clothes at the end of a session

  • Finishing at 2:30!

Other:

Remaining in good contact with the DSC and Volunteer Co-ordinator – notifying us at least 2 days prior to the group if you’re unable to attend.
