From North Manchester to Buckingham Palace: Celebrating Two Extraordinary TDS Volunteers

As Volunteers' Week came to a close, we wanted to shine a spotlight on two remarkable members of our volunteering community, Susan and Janet, who recently attended a King's Garden Party at Buckingham Palace.

Last year, Together Dementia Support was encouraged by one of Greater Manchester's Deputy Lieutenants to nominate volunteers whose dedication and impact deserved special recognition.

For years, Susan and Janet have been the heart of our North Manchester Friendship & Activity Group. Together, they are often the first to arrive and the last to leave, helping to set up, welcome members, support activities, organise refreshments and ensure everyone feels included.

Their commitment goes far beyond the practical tasks. They have helped welcome new volunteers, supported countless group members, and played a huge role in creating the warm, supportive community that exists at the group today. Their warm welcome has helped new members feel at ease, and their creative activity ideas have brought joy to countless members.

We were delighted when Susan and Janet's nomination was successful and they received invitations to attend a King's Garden Party at Buckingham Palace.

The pair made the most of the occasion with a short break in London, visiting some of the capital's most famous landmarks before attending the Garden Party itself.

"It was an amazing afternoon," they said. "We enjoyed walking through the grounds, listening to the bands, and sampling dainty sandwiches and scrumptious tiny cakes."

They were also delighted to catch sight of King Charles and Queen Camilla, and were fortunate enough to see Princess Anne and the Duchess of Edinburgh up close during the event.

Reflecting on the day, Susan and Janet said:

"It was such an amazing experience, and one we never thought we would be lucky enough to attend. The memories of this day will stay with us forever, and a huge thank you to TDS for putting our names forward and thinking we deserved such a privilege."

We couldn't be prouder of Susan and Janet. Their kindness, commitment and generosity make a real difference to the lives of people living with dementia and carers every week.

Congratulations to you both on this well-deserved recognition, and thank you for everything you do for Together Dementia Support.
